Finding Your Mummy Tribe

June 30, 2018

I am on a mission for mums to connect not only with their babies through baby massage and yoga but also to connect with other mums.

When you first embark on motherhood it turns your life upside down. A woman goes from having a job, friends and perhaps a busy social life to basically being at the beck and call of a tiny human that squawks at you 24 hours, 7 days a week. There are no lunch hours or even time off to sleep. This can come as quite a shock to many women as no amount of advice from others or reading all of the pregnancy and birth books can you prepare you for this topsy-turvy way of life.

It can suddenly feel very lonely when your partner returns to work, leaving you, literally, holding the baby. There may be a sudden resentment that you feel towards your partner as he has the opportunity to leave the house and seek adult conversation.

This is when the ‘mummy tribe’ comes into action. When you can associate with other mothers who are at the same stage as you it suddenly relieves you from social isolation. It gives you an opportunity to chat to other mums who are going through the same issues and experiencing the same feelings that you are going through too.  It also helps you to relieve some of the ‘mummy guilt’ that we all carry around with us so you can see that how you are feeling is normal. It is normal to feel tired, it is normal to feel fed up and it is normal to miss your old life at times.  You only find this when you chat and connect with others. Yes, you may spend your whole time together chatting about the colour of your baby’s poo or complaining about feeling like a dairy cow because your baby is going through a growth spurt and is none stop feeding but that is ok.  These ladies ‘get you’!

Connection to others is so important whether you are a first time mum or adjusting to life as a mum of two or three. Studies show that mothers who have support and interaction with a community are more optimistic about parenting and experience lower levels of stress. This in turn affected their relationship with their children. As those who have lower levels of stress and were more optimistic raised children who were more secure and well adapted as adults. It really is true what they say, that “it takes a village to raise a child”.

In our fast paced lives where everything seems just a little more transient these days, it can be difficult to find that village to help us raise our child and to raise us as mothers too. This is where Happy Sleepy Baby steps in……..

As I said above, I am on a mission to establish as many small mummy tribes as possible. The small groups that I teach are the ideal place for mums to chat in comfortable surroundings so that they can get to know one another and offer peer support in a real non-judgmental environment. Advice is forthcoming from those who are in exactly the situation as you and sometimes you just need to vent and you can rest assured that this is a safe space for you to do so.

I have learnt throughout the three years that I have been teaching that small groups thrive. It allows mums the time to connect as well as creating that relaxed environment, where chatter just flows.  I have witnessed so many blossoming friendships between mums that offer mutual support and enables them to be themselves without fear of judgement. I cannot express in words how much joy this gives me when I see these groups of women empowering each other.

This mission is a long reaching one and I hope that you will join me when your baby arrives for baby massage and baby yoga so you can begin your journey into motherhood with support.

I am so lucky to have been involved in the fabulous project that is Love Letters for New Mothers by Blossom & Berry. This book is a collection of wonderful letters from mothers to mothers. It is the greatest example of women supporting women. These letters are full of love, support, encouragement and many pearls of wisdoms. It is a true reflection of all that is motherhood.  Also, all proceeds go to charity and split between PANDAS which helps parents suffering with mental health and Love Support Unite which provides aid to mothers and babies in Malawi. You can find the book here: https://www.blossomandberry.com/shop/love-letters-for-new-mothers-collected-wisdom-from-mothers-across-the-world/
